DISCRIPTION

Cefotec-CV Tablet is a combination of (Cefpodoxime Proxetil 200 mg + Potassium Clavulnate 125 mg) contains cefpodoxime proxetil, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, and potassium clavulanate, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Cefpodoxime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, while clavulanate prevents bacterial enzymes from deactivating cefpodoxime, thereby extending its spectrum of activity. Indicated for treating a variety of bacterial infections, this formulation is effective against respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and ear, nose, and throat infections (e.g., sinusitis, tonsillitis). The Cefotec-CV Tablet (Cefpodoxime Proxetil 200 mg + Potassium Clavulnate 125 mg) is particularly useful in overcoming antibiotic resistance, enhancing the efficacy of cefpodoxime against beta-lactamase-producing bacteria. Always consult a healthcare provider before initiating treatment to ensure appropriate use and monitoring.

INDICATION

  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTIs): This Cefotec-CV Tablet (Cefpodoxime Proxetil 200 mg + Potassium Clavulnate 125 mg) combination is effective in treating pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and acute maxillary sinusitis. These conditions are often caused by Streptococcus pyogenes and Haemophilus influenzae, both of which are susceptible to this medication.

  • Lower Respiratory Tract Infections (LRTIs): It is used to treat acute community-acquired pneumonia and acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis. These infections are typically caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae, which are effectively targeted by Cefotec-CV Tablet (Cefpodoxime Proxetil 200 mg + Potassium Clavulnate 125 mg).

  • Sexually Transmitted Infections: It is indicated for the treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea and rectal gonococcal infections. Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the causative agent, is effectively targeted by Cefotec-CV Tablet (Cefpodoxime Proxetil 200 mg + Potassium Clavulnate 125 mg).

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Cefpodoxime Proxetil: This is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that functions as a prodrug. Upon oral administration, it is absorbed and hydrolyzed to its active form, cefpodoxime. Cefpodoxime exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), particularly PBP3, disrupting peptidoglycan cross-linking, which is essential for maintaining cell wall integrity. This disruption leads to cell lysis and death of the bacteria. Cefpodoxime demonstrates stability against certain beta-lactamases, enzymes produced by bacteria that can degrade many beta-lactam antibiotics, thereby extending its spectrum of activity against resistant strains.

Potassium Clavulanate: Clavulanate is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that works by binding to beta-lactamase enzymes produced by bacteria. These enzymes typically hydrolyze the beta-lactam ring of antibiotics, rendering them ineffective. Clavulanate forms a covalent bond with the beta-lactamase enzyme, preventing it from hydrolyzing the antibiotic, thus protecting cefpodoxime from degradation and enhancing its antibacterial efficacy.

PRECAUTION

Cefotec-CV Tablet is a combination of Cefpodoxime Proxetil 200 mg combined with Potassium Clavulanate 125 mg should be used with caution in individuals with a history of allergies to cephalosporins, penicillins, or other beta-lactam antibiotics due to potential cross-reactivity. Patients with renal impairment may require dose adjustments to prevent accumulation and reduce the risk of adverse effects. Additionally, this combination may decrease the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives, so alternative or additional contraceptive methods should be considered during treatment. It's also important to inform healthcare providers of all concurrent medications, as interactions with drugs like antacids, diuretics, and anticoagulants can occur.
